Factory cost calculator

We built an app for SACMI's sales team. On a tablet, they put together an entire wall and floor tile factory and immediately see its operating costs and payback.

  • 3steps: product, plant, performance
  • 8cost categories and a breakdown by production phase
  • 4levels of default values: general, country, product, both
  • IT · ENlanguages of the app and the reports

The situation

The operating costs of a ceramics plant depend on hundreds of parameters that vary by country, product and technology. The machine maker's sales team needs quotes that are consistent and up to date, and that they can explain to the customer.

What we built

A three-step wizard and a console for headquarters.

  • Product: country, plant type, capacity and tile formats with their share and price.
  • Plant: for every production phase, from grinding to packing, the choice of technology and its parameters.
  • Performance: annual and unit operating costs, payback, electricity and heat consumption, cost charts.
  • Quote export to PDF and Excel, and copying of variants.
  • Headquarters console: default values with validity periods, technologies, Italian and English translations.

Connecting to the calculation model

The manufacturer's calculation model does the actual calculation. The app sends it the full plant configuration and presents the results so they can be explained right away. When the model returns an error, the salesperson sees it as a warning and can keep working.

In practice

In a meeting at the customer's site, the salesperson switches the kiln technology, and the costs and payback recalculate on the spot. The quote goes out as a PDF.
